Another year has passed and a new one has dawned with both significant challenges and opportunities.  Two issues of primary importance to us all are the state of the economy and how we govern ourselves.

As an elected representative I have the pleasure of meeting many local volunteers driven to community involvement by foresight, perseverance and commitment to cooperation.

When people come up with a good idea, they usually don't wait 40 years to see it come to fruition, but in 1968 a group of local residents bought some land in the heart of Sooke with a plan to build supportive housing for seniors as the community aged and money became available.

DELTA - Gordon Campbell's relentless drive to plow ahead with his preferred route for high voltage lines through Delta is wasting millions of dollars, say the New Democrats.

"Campbell wouldn't listen to the community, he didn't care about homeowners, he just pushed ahead with his own narrow vision for the power line route," said Delta North MLA Guy Gentner. "Now we find out that it will cost $40 to $50 million more to buy out the homes that will be impacted by Campbell's route."

E&N Rail advocates are cheering a provincial recommendation to put money into the decaying line.

The select standing committee on finance, made up of Liberal and NDP
MLAs, said Monday in a budget priorities report the project to restore
the line for commuter and freight services should be a capital spending
priority.

The one thing on everyone's minds these days is the economy.  We see residential construction slowing, house prices falling and the stock market in crisis.  Everyone is wondering how our province is doing and how the government can help citizens through this coming tough economic time.

I'm overwhelmed by the outpouring of kind words, encouragement and best wishes for my speedy recovery and am truly grateful to be a part of this wonderful, supportive community!

My recuperation is going well and I expect to be back standing up for the rights of constituents at the opening of the Legislature on November 20th.
